ABRANTES AND LISBON, PORTUGAL
A winter trip to Portugal with my ex-girlfriend to meet her family for a week. A lucky, last minute booking to spend extra time with Barbara. Her family were very welcoming, but we struggled to communicate and Barbara was always translating. I flew into Lisbon Airport for a private tour around the capital with her sister. We travelled on trams around the city, visited some famous landmarks of Lisbon and I tried to embrace as much as it as possible.
We visited the best bakery in Lisbon famous for Portuguese egg custard tarts. Unbelievably delicious. They are called Pateis de Belem. They have a flaky and crispy outside with a cinnamon and nutmeg custard on the inside best served with a strong coffee. There was a huge queue, which can only mean one thing (I'll let you guess that). On the table was a sprinkler of cinnamon and sugar for the coffee. Only one thing to do was, powder the cinnamon on top and give it a go. An almighty burst of flavour hit my mouth and they were so mourish. I ended up eating three (maybe four, I can't remember).
If you are ever in Lisbon, please visit "Pateis de Belem bakery," you won't regret it. Its where all the Portuguese go so you'll feel like the odd one out but you'll be embracing the culture and that's what its all about.

We travelled to Abrantes, Barbara's hometown in the middle of Portugal to experience some country style food from Lettuce Cake to Bacalao (salt cod).
